Kena takes players on an adventurous journey of self-discovery as Kena restores balance to an ancient village that was once a thriving environment. The game, a first for Ember Lab, debuted during the Sony PlayStation 5 “Future of Gaming” event in June that showcased new PS5 games. The already coveted gaming console will feature a slew of new and original games, including Kena: Bridge of Spirits, which was developed by the Grier brothers. The Grier brothers hope they – and Kena: Bridge of Spirits – can change the gaming industry and possibly pave the way for more Black game developers as the new Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console launches on Thursday. So, as long as we are creating, we don’t have a lot of time to think about much else,” he said. We work really hard and we are extremely passionate about the process. “We are a small team and everyone carries a lot of responsibility. When we began developing Kena, we never really thought about ourselves as being one of the only Black-owned game studios,” Josh Grier, 36, said of the new game they created for Sony’s new PlayStation 5. “We are very proud of who we are and we always feel our work will speak for itself. Making games is hard and there is a sense of camaraderie and support that exists in the industry,” said Josh Grier, chief operating officer and co-founder with his brother Mike of Ember Lab, an independent studio based in Los Angeles that specializes in character development for animated commercials and film. “Our experience in the game development community has been overwhelmingly positive. The success of their commercial and independent projects led them to develop their passion project and first game, Kena: Bridge of Spirits.Running one of the only Black-owned and -operated animation, digital and now-gaming studios has been quite the journey for brothers Josh and Mike Grier. Ember Lab produced the award-winning short film, Dust, and the acclaimed Majora's Mask fan film, Terrible Fate. Lead character artist, Wanchana Intrasombat (Vic) based in Thailand, has become a world-renowned concept artist since beginning his professional career with Ember Lab. Over fifty percent of the Ember Lab core team are graduates of the nearby Chapman University's Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. The studio has a history of fostering talent locally and abroad. Ember Lab is a small team that thinks and collaborates globally. This cooperative environment gives them the flexibility to take on highly complex projects. The team thrives on opportunities that push the limits of their ability and allows them to explore new development tools. In the studio, the lines between technical and artistic development tend to disappear as teams focus on delivering fantastic and innovative experiences that match their passion. The company's culture is based on a highly collaborative environment that melds the creative and production processes. Ember Lab's commercial work includes ad campaigns and animated shorts for The Coca-Cola Company, Hisense, and Major League Baseball. The team has a background in film and animation and the studio originally specialized in character development for advertising. Their goal was to create immersive stories through technical innovation, compelling characters, and cinematic worlds. Ember Lab was founded in 2009 by brothers Josh and Mike Grier as an animation and digital content studio. Ember Lab is an independent game development studio currently developing their first title, Kena: Bridge of Spirits.
